The U.S. health IT sector is on the brink of broad consolidation involving a handful of large firms that will emerge as health information network "superstores," according to a new report by financial advisory firm Marlin & Associates, InformationWeek reports.

The report -- titled "Back to the Future: Healthcare Rebooted" -- predicts that the growth of health technologies could lead to substantial changes in the quality and cost of health care. According to the report, major breakthroughs have been made in analytics, data management, infrastructure and telecommunications. These innovations have set the groundwork for additional breakthroughs.

'Superstore' Details

According to the report, a few "superstore" companies will dominate the health IT industry. These companies will be able to provide services that include:

* Administrative tasks; * Analytics evaluations; * Clinical tasks; * Communications; * Comprehensive data sharing; and * Revenue cycle management tasks (Lewis, InformationWeek, 11/10).

The consolidation will be led by administrative and revenue cycle management companies, the report authors said.

In addition to serving health care providers, payers and patients, the health information networks likely will provide data and analytics to educational, governmental and pharmaceutical groups, the report says.

The revenue model for the superstores probably will include some type of fee for data transactions, according to the report (Goedert, Health Data Management, 11/10).
